ABSTRACT: Research reveals that parental practices are positively related to self-conscious emotions of shame in adolescents. However, we require research that includes the parental figure, and discriminates between parenting practices and parenting styles. Therefore, this dissertation aimed to perceive the associations between parental practices, including mother and father, and adolescent shame. This is a cross-sectional study, which has the participation of 207 adolescents and their respective students (father and mother). The data were collected in the secondary schools of Lisbon, and the CRPR-Q: Child Rearing Practices Report (Rickel & Lawerence, 1979) was applied to the parents and the EVEI-A: External and Internal Shame Scale for Adolescents (Cunha et al., 2021) was applied to the adolescents. Results showed that, the use of negative parental practices (restrictiveness) is associated with shame in male adolescents. On the other hand, the more parental practices based on, affection, acceptance, and receptivity (care), the less female adolescents experience shame. In conclusion, this research could complement existing gaps and contribute to the effectiveness of future interventions.
