Abstract

ABSTRACT: After presentation of WHO global definition of health and of some measures developed to assess individual health status, the author tries to investigate empirically into some possible connections between personality development, psychological defense mechanisms and processes of coping to health conditions of subjects. The results on a sample of 114 adults of both sexes show that while coping mechanisms assessed by SOC Questionnaire was a consistent predictor of individual health, some defense mechanisms correlate with health but not in the sense expected. The implications in terms of psychotherapeutic interventions with physical patients and future research on relations between psychological defense mechanisms and health are presented.
