Utilização de melancia na alimentação de novilhos

Abstract

A Campina de Idanha é uma das zonas do país onde mais se produz melancia (Citrullus lanatus). Por vezes, devido ao excesso de produção ou devido à falta de qualidade de alguns frutos, a melancia produzida não tem valor comercial podendo ter como destino a alimentação animal. Neste trabalho caracteriza-se o fruto do ponto de vista nutricional e avalia-se o seu interesse para a alimentação de novilhos. A melancia apresenta elevados teores em PB (14,47% ±4,54) e em NFC (53,80% ±8,89). No entanto, devido aos baixos teores em MS (3,8% ±1,62), NDF (20,63% ±2,80) e ADF (18,39% ±2,93) a melancia só deverá ser utilizada na alimentação de ruminantes se associada à ingestão de alimentos forrageiros secos com o objetivo de aumentar os teores em MS, NDF e ADF para valores ≥40%, ≥40% e ≥21%, respetivamente. Na mistura, o NFC deverá ser ≤36%. Utilizando a técnica do Quadrado de Pearson, acertámos duas misturas para 45% de MS, 53,9% melancia + 46,1% palha de trigo (9,05MJ/kgMS, 9,39%PB, 46,93%NDF, 30,78%ADF e 33,97%NFC) e 54,3% melancia + 45,7% feno de aveia (9,82MJ/kgMS, 11,30%PB, 41,06%NDF, 27,33%ADF e 38,45%NFC). Quando alimentado com a primeira mistura, o GPD esperado para um novilho com o peso vivo inicial de 300kg é de 0,479kg/dia e quando alimentado com a segunda mistura o GPD esperado é de 0,647kg/dia. Conclui-se que a melancia poderá ser utilizada na alimentação de novilhos. No entanto, se complementada só com uma forragem seca, apenas permitirá GPD inferiores a 0,7kg/dia.
