A estrutura urbana de Castro Marim

Abstract

Os vestígios da ocupação humana em Castro Marim remontam ao final da Idade do Bronze (séc. IX a.C.) e início da Idade do Ferro (séc. VIII a.C.) na colina onde está implantado o castelo medieval. Este cerro, situado na margem direita do rio Guadiana, dispõe de condições naturais de defesa pela sua forma escarpada e circular, elevada 32 metros acima do nível médio das águas do mar. Além da boa visibilidade sobre o território envolvente, existem outros fatores como a abundância de recursos agrícolas e marinhos, ou a facilidade de navegação e da prática do comércio, que terão contribuído para a fixação de povos neste local considerado, deste muito cedo, como um ponto estratégico na região. Embora nos nossos dias o “cerro do castelo” se encontre rodeado por terra firme e zonas de sapal, com o rio afastado do bairro da Ribeira, Frei João de S. José refere, no século XVI, que as águas do rio chegavam perto das muralhas do castelo, deixando Castro Marim como uma península ligada a terra apenas por um estreito istmo a oeste. Na segunda década de seiscentos o engenheiro militar Alexandre Massai informa-nos que o comércio no cais da Ribeira ainda permanece ativo, mas na referência que faz já menciona as dificuldades da navegação nos esteiros, apesar de ainda acostarem no porto "naus de 100 toneladas a tomar o sal que ali há”.
