[EN] The photographic collections held at the Hispanic Society of America (USA) are an invaluable extramusical source reflecting fieldwork carried out by foreign researchers in Spain prior to the Civil War. Particularly important are the expressive images captured by Kurt Schindler and Ruth Anderson describing the identitary models of rural Spanish informants. The manner in which these researchers viewed daily life in Spain during the 1920s and 30s, from religious processions to open-air markets, folk dancing and popular traditions, has yet to be studied today and is in need of in-depth analysis. Their work could be described as retro-information, going beyond the fieldwork itself, because it included images of musical activities that intrinsically form a repertory that was subjected to both local and foreign influences. This material allows a description of how foreigners viewed rural Spain to be established, as well as how the country allowed researchers who interacted with their surroundings to view and photograph it. In this case, photography acts as an auxiliary discipline of musicology, at the service of Spanish music.
