RESUMEN: Despu?s de una breve referencia a la historia del m?todo comparado y a las razones de su debilidad en el ?mbito de la ciencia hist?rica, este art?culo trata de las ventajas, debilidades y problemas del m?todo comparado en historia y presta especial inter?s a las cuatro aproximaciones comparativas que el autor considera que se emplean hoy: el an?lisis hist?rico-comparativo intensivo de dos o m?s casos; la comparaci?n de grandes estructuras y procesos amplios; la aproximaci?n comparativa a la historia universal; y la utilizaci?n del m?todo comparado como herramienta de trabajo al servicio del historiador, sean cuales sean los objetivos finales de ?ste. ABSTRACT: After referring briefly to the history of the comparative method and the reasons fot its weakness in the sphere of the historical science, this article discusses the advantages, weaknesess and problems of the comparative method in history today, focusing particularly on the four comparative approaches which the author considers to be in use today: intensive comparative historical analysis of two or more cases; the comparison of large structures and broad processes; the comparative approach to universal history; and the use of the comparative method as a tool in the historian's service, whatever his or her ultimate objectives.
