Abstract

Partiendo de la coincidencia que se suele detectar entre los límites administrativos de la Hispania romana y las fronteras de las diversas etnias indígenas, el territorio de los cántabros comprendería el delimitado a partir de las fuentes clásicas. Este trabajo, realizado por diversos autores (FLÓREZ, E., 1768 y 1805; ASSAS, M., 1867; FERNÁNDEZ GUERRA, A., 1878; SÁNCHEZ ALBORNOZ, C, 1929; MENÉNDEZ PIDAL, R., 1956 y GONZÁLEZ ECHEGARAY, J., 1966 y 1979), ha fijado los límites de la Cantabria histórica en las cuencas del río Sella y en la divisoria de los ríos Esla y Porma por el oeste; el contacto entre la Cordillera Cantábrica y la Cuenca del Duero por el sur; las parameras de Sedano y las llanadas de la zona de Villarcayo por el SE y los valles del Asón, según unos, y del Agüera, según otros, por el este.
