A Historiografia Rural Portuguesa

Abstract

[EN] Until the 1960s, Portuguese rural life had been a subject of analysis mostly for jurists, ethnographers, and geographers. Since then, research on rural history of the early modern period has begun, in the context of an opening of Portuguese historiography to unexplored territories. At a fi rst stage, early modernist historians, following the guide lines of French and Spanish historiography, focused on conjunctural issues, dealing with indicators such as commodity prices, production and population. Later, welcoming English and Italian historiographical infl uences, they turned to subjects on rural social history. Traditional matters of agrarian history (landscapes, techniques, cultivation systems, property) have also drawn their attention. This article intends to chart a state of the art balance, comprehending both the results of the already carried out research and the problems still under observation.
