Abstract

En los a?os 20 la Universidad de Columbia subvencion? durante tres d?cadas, proyectos de investigaci?n del Departamento de Antropolog?a con la colaboraci?n del reci?n creado Instituto de las Espa?as. En estos proyectos jug? un papel clave Federico de On?s, catedr?tico de lengua y cultura espa?olas de esa Universidad, miembro a su vez de la Junta de Ampliaci?n de Estudios y del Centro de Estudios Hist?ricos. Como parte de uno de los proyectos, estaba el estudio del folklore contempor?neo en Espa?a. Para tal fin, On?s puso como condici?n que la instituci?n contraparte de Columbia fuera el citado Centro, bajo la direcci?n de la Secci?n de Folklore; y que el coordinador estadounidense fuera el m?sico y etnomusic?logo alem?n Kurt Schindler, que ya formaba parte del Patronato Nacional de Turismo espa?ol. Su idea era crear un Archivo de Folklore Espa?ol, para poder ser utilizado por estudiantes e investigadores del Instituto de las Espa?as. Uno de estos materiales subvencionados es la colecci?n fotogr?fica que Schindler realiz? en Europa desde el 25/10/1928 hasta el 1/5/1935, unos meses antes de su fallecimiento. Tras su muerte sus albaceas dispusieron de su legado personal vendi?ndolo a diferentes instituciones. Por este motivo, esta colecci?n de fotos fue comprada por Archer M. Huntington para su Hispanic Society of America. Gracias a diversas estancias de investigaci?n en esa instituci?n entre 2001-2013 he podido realizar un inventario de dicha colecci?n, donde se puede seguir la cronolog?a de los viajes y las redes que establec?a.
