Abstract

En los estudios sobre patrimonio musical la partitura adquiere especial relevancia al constituir una fuente tangible portadora de cuantiosa informaci?n sobre el contexto de praxis musicales ocurridas en el pasado. Tal es el caso de Spanish Sacred and Secular Songs, colecci?n publicada en Nueva York en el a?o 1918 por la casa editorial Oliver Ditson Company, conformada por cinco canciones populares espa?olas adaptadas para diferentes tesituras de voces y piano. Kurt Schindler fue el arreglista y editor de todas las piezas. En esos momentos, el m?sico alem?n se desempe?aba como director musical de la Schola Cantorum de Nueva York, agrupaci?n que hab?a interpretado las melod?as el 15 de enero de 1918 en el Carnegie Hall. La edici?n de cuatro colecciones, todas a cargo de Kurt Schindler, publicadas entre 1918 y 1923 recogen gran parte de las m?s de setenta canciones interpretadas por la Schola Cantorum en el prestigioso teatro durante ocho a?os. Spanish Sacred and Secular Songs fue la primera de ellas. A partir del estudio de los pr?logos de dos de las canciones incluidas (The Virgin?s Plaint y The birds praise the advent of the saviour) y del cotejo con otras fuentes primarias se elaboran posibles respuestas a interrogantes sobre las din?micas que propiciaron la circulaci?n de estas melod?as en el Nueva York de principios del siglo XX.
