After the War of the Spanish Succession, the 1713 Peace of Utrecht established a new balance in Europe as fundamental for maintaining peace. But Philip V of Spain refused to accept the losses of its Italian possessions. He launched the conquest of Sardinia in 1717, and in Sicily in 1718. This belligerent policy caused the reaction of other European powers which signed the Quadruple Alliance so as to restore the balance. When a new war sparked, Philip V was forced to return the conquered islands. The 1720 Treaty of The Hague closed the first chapter in the long dispute for the balance in the Mediterranean. This balance of power system was repeatedly questioned by several interests of the European powers. It was a balance full of imbalances.
