traducci?n audiovisual del lenguaje tab? entre lenguas romances

Audiovisual Translation of Taboo Language between Romance Languages
Authors: Cândido Moura, Willian Henrique;

traducci?n audiovisual del lenguaje tab? entre lenguas romances

Abstract

This research shows the analysis of dubbing and subtitling on DVD, from Spanish to Brazilian Portuguese, of somatic taboo words in the film Todo sobre mi madre (1999) directed by Pedro Almod?var. The aim of the study was to analyze which translation techniques were used to translate the somatic taboo words of the film, and if the translation reached the offensive load in Brazilian Portuguese. In addition to dictionaries, we used a proposal based on the descriptive model of analysis of offensive and taboo language in subtitling (?vila-Cabrera 2015). Somatic taboo words, in other words, taboo words and expressions about parts of the body (Moura 2020b), were chosen here because they present close and distant relations between the two Romance languages. Results show that there was a tendency in the Brazilian audiovisual translation to the substitution of the taboo, followed by literal translation and omission. Another result shows that translation presented a tendency to tone down the taboo load of somatisms in subtitling and to maintain it in dubbing. Therefore, it is concluded that the audiovisual translation of somatic taboo words into Brazilian Portuguese, in this film, validated the assumption that reading a ?swear word? is more shocking than hearing it (Reid 1978, Arango 1991, Luyken 1991, D?az-Cintas 2001).
