El artículo se ocupa, en primer lugar, de las fuentes griegas, literarias e iconográficas, que ofrecen testimonios del mito de Meleagro. Dicho análisis saca a la luz no sólo las distintas versiones que existían en la Antigüedad, sino las dificultades que surgen al intentar conciliarlas. Consecuentemente, la segunda parte del artículo pasa revista a diversas, interpretaciones del mito de Meleagro emprendidas por los estudiosos modernos, llamando la atención sobre sus aciertos, mas también sobre algunas lecturas excesivamente sesgadas. La intención es poner de manifiesto la necesidad de combinar las ventajas que ofrecen los diferentes métodos, pero procurando superar la parcialidad de algunos resultados e insistiendo especialmente en el análisis filológico de los textos, tanto de los griegos como de los procedentes de otras tradiciones literarias, cuyos detalles y variantes puedan contribuir a un mejor entendimiento de la historia de Meleagro.

This article analyses the sources of the myth of Meleager as represented in Greek texts, al so examining the iconographical evidence. This study reveals several versions, and discusses difficulties in interpreting them. The diverse approaches or methodologies of previous scholars to the character of Meleager is subsequently outlined. It is the author's aim to refute some tendentious readings of the myth, and to demonstrate the advantages of combining different methods, especially that of philological analysis of the relevant texts, both inside and outside the Greek tradition, the details of which contribute to a fuller understanding of Meleager.
