Despite the large number of studies dedicated to the impact assessment of biofuels, the social aspects of their sustainability remain overlooked. This paper aims at presenting a novel method of systematic gathering of social aspects related to the sustainability of technoscientific policies and projects, using ethanol as a case study. We conclude that the social matrix, developed from a systematic review of the available literature, is a valuable tool for collecting information in a research field such as biofuels? sustainability, characterised by a lack of primary data, consensus and homogeneity in the scientific approach of the subject.
