O caminho biopsicossocial da (in)fertilidade

Abstract

In this article, we intend to explore and understand the biopsychosocial path of (in)fertility in beneficiaries of Medically Assisted Procreation (MAP). Issues involving the chronological age of the beneficiaries, the need for psychological support and the psychological support offered, the "meaning for life" in being a parent, religion and faith, attitudes towards science and technology and the dignity of the child in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process were explored. The analysis was based on data from an online questionnaire conducted with 85 beneficiaries. The results showed that age is related to infertility, namely with the number of IVF cyclesinitiated and completed. The need for psychological support is greater in those who regret having tried IVF when it did not result in pregnancy, as well as it is greater after IVF jointly with the support offered to the beneficiaries who represent the embryo as thebeginning of life. Those who consider that being a father or a mother gives “meaning for life” represents more the embryo as the beginning of life, a human being, a potential person and almost a real baby and less as just a part of the MAP process. Still, for those who consider that the “meaning for life” is being a father or a mother, that being a father or mother is a moral/religious obligation and that havea religion, also considerthat we are too dependent on technology and not so dependent on faith. Finally, for those who have more favorable attitudes towards science and technology also consider that the dignity and respect for the child during the IVF process are considered. Theoretical and methodological considerations are drawn from the results.
