Abstract

Sentarmo-nos frente às Tentações de Santo Antão no Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga em Lisboa tende a gerar em nós a sensação de nos encontrarmos numa terra desconhecida. Comecemos por perguntar se o estudo dos seus principais temas religiosos pode fazer desaparecer esta impressão. Quando o tríptico está fechado, vemos os dois painéis exteriores: o da esquerda representa a prisão de Cristo; o da direita, o caminho do calvário, o «porte da cruz». Em ambos, impressiona a maldade dos homens — as suas ações violentas, as suas caras carregadas de cólera e orgulho, nalguns casos de luxúria e gula, imagens exemplares dos pecados mortais. Mesmo não comungando da fé cristã, compreendemos o que significa, para ela, a culpa que a humanidade carrega consigo por ter pecado contra o Cristo e repelido com ingratidão a graça de Deus. Quando o tríptico está aberto, vemos as tentações de Santo Antão em três painéis, e de facto em todos eles o essencial está, afinal, longe de nos ser estranho.
