Abstract

The present study has the general objective to verify the relationship of psychomotor profile and cognitive performance in children with and without learning disabilities (LD). This research was divided into two studies, making initially, a more general approach about the LD’s interaction, gender and grade in the psychomotor profile and cognitive performance and, afterwards, a more specific study about the impact of psychomotor profile and socioeconomic status (SES) on cognitive performance. Therefore, the first study aimed to verify the interaction of LD, gender and grade in the psychomotor profile and cognitive performance and the second one, verify the influence of psychomotor profile and SES on cognitive performance. The sample consisted in a group of 139 children (66 girls and 73 boys) aged 6-10 years old (7.95±1.05), from the "Gabinete de Promoção do Desenvolvimento Infantil", Universidade of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. To characterize the psychomotor profile was used the Psychomotor Battery (BPM), to evaluate cognitive performance were used the Raven Coloured Progressive Matrices (MPCR), as well as a question sheet to collect data on the socio-economic status. The results of the first study show an effect of LD on psychomotor profile and cognitive performance of children in elementary school. Children with DA and younger show a lower psychomotor profile; while boys with LD show a lower cognitive performance. In the second study, we found a positive association between the majority of psychomotor factors and MPCR in children with and without LD, verifying a positive association of socioeconomic variables in children without LD. When it comes to linear regression, there is an influence of the spatiotemporal structure and thin praxis in cognitive performance of children with LD; while in children without LD, balance and spatiotemporal structure are the significant variables. In conclusion, the spatiotemporal structure and thin praxis are the two variables that manifest themselves in the relationship between the psychomotor profile and the cognitive performance.
