Abstract

Does the social context (family/ institution) where the teenager lives conditionate his/her autonomy? This is the question that this investigation tries to answer. The study method used to know this answer was 222 teenagers (110 boys and 112 girls), aged 13 to 18; 49,5% of the teenagers live with their families and 50, 5% live in a foster institution. To evaluate autonomy the Inventário de Separação Psicológica was used (Almeida, Dias & Fontaine, 1996), this is the Portuguese version for the book Psychological Inventory Separation (Hoffman, 1984). A questionnaire about social demographic datum was applied. The results showed teenagers who live in foster institutions present a better emotional autonomy than the teenagers who live with their families. Teenagers who live with their families present a higher number of functional autonomy. No differences were found in gender. The questionnaires showed that the age influences. Younger teenagers living with their families, aged 13 to 14, present more autonomy than the older ones. Teenagers living in foster institutions do not present autonomy differences. It was not found an association between the institutionalization time and autonomy. It can be conclude the importance of the autonomy promotion whether in family or institution context.
