Abstract

Bullying is a growing and very complex phenomenon that peaks in adolescence and adds stress and tension to an already intense phase. In these aggressive contexts, there are always those who observe but do not act directly in the situation, but who also suffer emotional damage as a result of exposure to aggressive events. Parental educational styles (PES) and empathy play an important role in the lives of all children and also in the lives of those who observe bullying. The aim of the current study was to analyse the relationship between PES and empathy in relation to observers with a sample of 421 adolescents aged between 12 and 17. Questionnaires were used to collect the data: Social Exclusion and School Violence Questionnaire (SESVQ), Parenting Styles & Dimensions Questionnaire: Short Version (PSDQ), Basic Empathy Scale (BES) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The results suggest a positive relationship and prediction of democratic PSS with empathy and also of mothers' authoritarian PES with observers. In addition, there were higher levels of empathy in girls and higher percentages of observation in elementary school, with verbal aggression being the most observed. We therefore recommend a more in-depth study of the role of observers in bullying and the creation of intervention programs in schools to prevent and raise awareness of this very current and negative problem.
