La transformada rápida de Fourier

Abstract

Desde su redescubrimiento en los años 50, la clase de algoritmos conocida como transformadas rápidas de Fourier (FFTs) ha sido fundamental en numerosos campos de las matemáticas, la ciencia y la ingeniería. No es de sorprender que el algoritmo de Cooley-Tukey (conocido comúnmente como la FFT) sea ampliamente reconocido como uno de los algoritmos más importantes del siglo XX. En este trabajo, buscamos ofrecer un enfoque estructurado y bien fundamentado para el desarrollo de FFTs. Comenzamos con los fundamentos matemáticos de los espacios Lp y la transformada continua de Fourier, que proporcionan una nueva forma de ver funciones a través de su espectro de frecuencias. Más adelante, introducimos la transformada discreta de Fourier (DFT) como una herramienta numérica que permite aplicar los métodos de Fourier. El cálculo de la DFT para entradas de gran tamaño solo es viable gracias a la FFT. Finalmente, presentamos una breve introducción a dos de los grandes ámbitos de aplicación: el procesamiento de señales digitales y la compresión de datos. En particular, revisamos los filtros de audio digital y examinamos el papel de las FFTs en la compresión de imágenes JPEG.
