Entre la sabiduría y la decrepitud: concepción y papel de la vejez en la Plena y Baja Edad Media

Abstract

El estudio de la vejez ha suscitado escaso interés en la historiografía hasta finales del siglo pasado por su apreciación como un fenómeno minentemente contemporáneo, entendiendo que los ancianos eran poco numerosos en las sociedades premodernas y no desempeñaban una función relevante. Frente a esto, nuestro objetivo consiste en tratar de refutar esta idea mediante el análisis de la consideración y papel social de estos individuos durante la Plena y Baja Edad Media (siglos XI al XV). Para ello nos aproximaremos con un enfoque cuantitativo y demográfico a cuestiones como la longevidad y la posibilidad de alcanzar una edad avanzada en este periodo; así como también abordaremos el modelo teórico de vejez imperante en esta etapa (incidiendo en la visión de los intelectuales a través de los arquetipos de “etapas de la vida”, las transformaciones en las postrimerías del Medievo y las particularidades del caso femenino). Asimismo, nos centraremos en los roles de estos ancianos, rastreando su presencia en los diferentes órdenes sociales y examinando cómo las dos principales facetas que se les atribuían (experiencia y vulnerabilidad) se tradujeron en prácticas concretas: reconocimiento de su autoridad cultural en diferentes ámbitos y protección institucional, respectivamente.
