Abstract

Los animales no humanos son utilizados rutinariamente en toda una serie de procedimientos en el ámbito biomédico. En la práctica totalidad de los casos estos consisten en tratamientos notablemente agresivos, que además conllevan la reclusión, aislamiento y, finalmente, la muerte de los animales empleados. Todo esto tiene lugar de un modo generalizado e institucionalizado, dándose un amplio consenso alrededor de su aceptabilidad. Se asume comúnmente que los intereses de los animales que no pertenecen a nuestra especie pueden ser dejados a un lado si ello resulta conveniente para la satisfacción de intereses humanos, sin necesidad de efectuar ponderación alguna del peso de los intereses implicados en cada caso. Encontramos, a la luz de esto, que la consideración dada a los animales no humanos contrasta con la que, de manera general, se asume que los humanos deben recibir. Los animales no humanos son utilizados en prácticas en los que se censura el uso de humanos, y ello se lleva adelante con un notable consenso. En el ámbito biomédico esto puede verse con claridad examinando el documento que se ha convertido en la referencia para la regulación de la investigación llevada a cabo en humanos, la Declaración de Helsinki. En esta se incluye toda una serie de consideraciones sobre el modo en que la experimentación con sujetos humanos ha de ser llevada a cabo…
