Abstract

For mining and manufacturing of ornamental stones, the presence of discontinuities in the exploited blocks is an economic risk factor. The existence of a method of inspection fast, low cost and non-intrusive to the blocks evaluation would carry out to a better use and avoid great quantities of waste. In this study was used ultrasound testing, a non-destructive method, applied to a limestone block. After some preliminary tests it was determined the performance of three types of contact test, two by surface transmission and one by direct transmission. It was intended to apply this technique to detect and locate any internal discontinuities in the block, but also can differentiate their grain size. With these surface transmission tests and its conjugation, was possible to locate and detect individualized visible cracks, but also non-visible cracks at the surface of tested face. Of these tests, in which the distance between the transducers is smaller and constant (maps), propagation velocities values can be observed between 7500 and 6500m/s in zones of coarser grain with finer matrix, between 6000 and 5000m/s in zones of finer grain and homogenous grain and between 4500 and 3500m/s in zones of fracturing, achieving in this way distinguish zones of different grain sizes. This methodology has proven to be of easy application, but it is necessary a combination of several tests for a consistent interpretation.
