O vitalismo tecnológico de André Leroi-Gourhan

Abstract

The goal of our research is to update André Leroi-Gourhan's contributions to the anthropology of technique, a discipline he helped to establish in the first half of the 20th century, under the influence of Marcel Mauss. The main axis of our research will be the concept of "technological vitalism" (in the words of Deleuze and Guattari). Leroi-Gourhan intends to situate the organism as the foundation of technology. This means that, on the one hand, the morphological evolution of utensils must obey a movement analogous to biological evolution. On the other hand, we will try to prove that the progressive adaptation of form to function is not incompatible with the symbolic dimension. Leroi-Gourhan's works will be our primary source. The comments and data collected by other anthropologists will serve as a counterpoint to our conceptual analysis, in order to specify the scope and potential fruitfulness of this epistemological project, which has exerted an enormous influence on some important contemporary anthropologists, such as Tim Ingold, Bruno Latour and Pierre Lemonnier.
