Abstract

Limestone submitted to high temperatures and pressures created a metamorphic rock, commercially known as marble. The rocks manufacturing sector, for industrial and ornamental purposes produce large amounts of waste - sludge from cutting, sawing and polishing. For an efficient reuse of waste and by-products from processing rocks we need to perform a powder characterization and find an application that allows a high consumption of this "new" raw material, thereby adding economic value to this waste and turning it into a secondary raw material. The purpose of this study is to characterize physical and chemical proprieties of the marble powder and with it, study one or more possible applicability’s for industrial use micronized marble powder as a raw material. From this, a series of analyzes were performed to determine the characteristics of the micronized powder of calcium carbonate with and without additives and thermal treatments for industrial application. The two possible paths are the addition in Portland cement clinker and the production of synthetic wollastonite, in both ways as a source of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The results were positive and focused on environmental policy applied to the waste management and treatment.

O mármore, como é conhecido comercialmente, é uma rocha metamórfica que tem origem no calcário que foi exposto a temperaturas e pressões elevadas. As indústrias transformadoras de rochas para fins ornamentais e industriais, produzem grandes quantidades de resíduos - lamas de corte, serragem e polimento. Para um eficiente reaproveitamento de desperdícios e subprodutos do processamento de rochas, há que realizar uma caracterização do material e encontrar uma aplicação que permita um elevado consumo desta “nova” matéria-prima, acrescentando assim valor económico a este resíduo e transformando-o numa matéria-prima secundária. O objectivo deste estudo consiste em caracterizar física e quimicamente os pós de mármore e estudar uma ou mais aplicabilidades possíveis para o seu uso industrial. Assim, uma série de análises foram realizadas para avaliar as características do pó micronizado de carbonato de cálcio (CaCO3), com ou sem tratamento térmico. Duas vias possíveis foram consideradas possíveis, a incorporação dos pós no clínquer de cimentos Portland e a síntese de “wollastonite” sintética. O estudo conduziu a soluções direccionadas para sustentar uma política ambiental aplicada à gestão e tratamento de resíduos.
