Surdez Súbita Neurossensorial: Diagnóstico e Terapêutica

Abstract

Introduction: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) affects 5 to 27 per 100.000 people annually. The SSNHL defined by a defined by a 30-dB or over SNHL at 3 consecutive frequencies, occurring within less than 72 hours. Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss is defined as SSNHL with no identifiable cause despite adequate investigation. Furthermore, nonidiopathic causes of SSNHL must be identified and addressed during the course of management. Early diagnosis is essential to institute effective therapy as soon as possible in order to increase the likelihood of hearing recovery and the patient's life quality. There are several treatment options available for SSNHL. However, uncertainty regarding its comparative efficacy and safety makes it difficult to select the ideal treatment for SSNHL.Objectives: The aim of the present study is to elaborate a review of the research carried out in the last 5 years regarding the diagnosis and treatment of SSNHL, in order to raise awareness and clarify about this pathology.Materials and Methods: Literature review on articles published on the internet platform ‘Pubmed’ bibliographic database, which started on September 10, 2020, using the terms “Sudden Hearing Loss” in the search field, restricting the search to a period of time from 2020 to 2015, corresponding to a period of 5 years. Conclusions: Despite the extensive literature on this pathology, future research should be conducted in order to determine current deficiencies in the evidence regarding diagnosis and therapy.
