Otosclerosis, first described in 1704 by Antonio Valsalva, is characterized by bony proliferation in the otic capsule, mainly in the vestibular (oval) window, which results in stapes fixation. It’s an autossomal dominant disease, with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity, that is more common in caucasian women, between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. Typical symptoms include progressive bilateral hearing loss, sometimes accompanied by vertigo and tinnitus. The audiometric findings include conductive or mixed hearing loss, absence of stapedial reflexes and normal or type As tympanogram. The treatment may undergo a medical and / or surgical approach, with stapedotomy / stapedectomy being the surgical treatment of choice. The aim of this thesis is to do a bibliographic revision about this theme by identifying new etiology factors, clinical manifestations and innovative forms of diagnosis and treatment.
