Qualidade do Sono em Estudantes Universitários

Abstract

Sleep plays an important role regarding the physical and psychological well-being of each individual. Multiple epidemiological studies exist suggesting that an average of 7 to 8 hours of continuous sleep should be upheld in order to maintain a balanced health. University students are part of a population that is vulnerable to sleep problems, resulting from lifestyle changes to which they are subjected to when entering higher education. Sleep deprivation leads to changes in both behavioral and psysiological levels. Poor sleep quality is immediately exhibited, therefore reflecting itself in students' results, furthermore in excessive daytime sleepiness, volatile humor and low performance. This dissertation aims to contribute to the increase of scientific knowledge about this topic, analyzing, for that purpose, the quality of sleep of university students according to the sociodemographic variables, consumption patterns (alcohol, drugs and tobacco) and stress levels. The sample consists of 176 subjects, aged between 18 and 52 years old, in which 139 of them are female (79%) and 37 are male (21%), with an education level between the 12th grade up to their 23 years of age. To assess sleep, questionnaires such as Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESE) and Basic Insomnia and Sleep Quality Scale (BaSIQS) were used. The results indicate that most students in the sample have poor sleep quality and variables such as daytime sleepiness, stress, alcohol consumption and anxiolytics may be related to poor sleep quality. Keywords: Sleep, University Students, Stress, Lifestyle, Consumption
