Abstract

Papeleira is a manufacturer of 100% recycled cardboard of high basis weight, its final product is essentially used on the manufacture of tubes, angles and other related applications. After its acquisition by Darvesh Group, an investment project was created in 2016 to optimize the quality of its final product, to upgrade the process and also to increase its productive capacity. With the objective of evaluating the drying section efficiency, mass and energetic balances in paper, water and air were made to determine a range of seven performance indicators. These indicators were the humidity and temperature of the exhaust air’s dew point, the specific consumption of blown air, the temperature of blown air, the specific consumption of steam, the evaporation rate and the specific consumption of energy. The results obtained – when compared with the benchmark values used by the paper industry – allowed to conclude that, although the steam specific average consumption and the energy specific average consumption are low (1,25 tonsteam/tonpaper e 2,81 GJ/tonpaper, respectively), there would be opportunities for improvement. The decrease of the steam consumption would be possible through a reduction of the blown air specific consumption of 12 kgair/kgevaporated water to 10 - 7 kgair/kgevaporated water. To study the effect of the CEA change in the air humidity, a model was applied based in differential equations. With this model was also studied the effect of a blown air temperature increase and a paper entrance temperature increase in the drying section. The simulations allowed to conclude that the flow reductions proposed for the blown and exhaust air, associated with an increase of the blown air temperature to 90-93ºC and with a control of the paper entrance temperature to situate it between 38 and 40ºC, would enhance a reduction in the specific consumption of steam and energy. Therefore, it would be possible to achieve a saving in the steam daily cost of 90 to 290€/day.
