Organismos geneticamente modificados e saúde pública : uma perspectiva integrada

Abstract

Genetically Modified Organisms provide multiple and increasing applications in the domain of medical and biological research, nutrition, health, environment and, especially, in agriculture. Simultaneously, they raise concerns about the potential risks to health and the environment, as well as political, economic and social issues, motivating significant controversy about the real contribution of this technology for mankind. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive scientific view, integrated in a political, economic and social context, of the benefits and risks of this technology in a Public Health lens, followed by a personal opinion. Through a review of recent scientific literature, based on a Medline research, and integrating reports from governmental and intergovernmental bodies, the paper analyses health issues (impact of genetically modified organisms in medicine and research, food safety of genetically modified foods, potential to address malnutrition and hunger), environmental issues (potential for sustainable development, environmental risks and biosafety), as well as socioeconomic issues (intellectual property rights, market monopolization, poverty and unemployment, coexistence with non-genetically modified organisms, amongst others). It is concluded, in a critical way, on the need to develop, provide and manage modern biotechnology for the benefit of mankind and the environment, and some approaches and points of focus to achieve this goal are discussed.
