Abstract

Nowadays logistics and transportation areas depend on each other increasingly more due to the globalization of markets. Both supply and the demand are global as well as companies and costumers, being expected that, as time goes by, demands increase.Throughout time, goods and people transportation have been accomplished to improve people’s lives in order to create extra comfort to society itself, whereby transportation and logistics are fundamental instruments to achieve a better and more sustainable quality of life.Goods transportation is made in a way to deliver the different products to the places where they are needed. To achieve this, a company must have logistics objectives consistent with the goal of satisfying costumer’s needs in a quick and efficient way, providing them with the products required in the right place, time and quantities. Transportation costs represents the biggest expense in a company. The specific case study dealt with in this dissertation regards the pulp and paper industry, more specifically, the wood production and distribution in the entire Portuguese territory in order to supply four pulp and paper plants in four Portuguese municipalities (Setúbal, Aveiro, Figueira da Foz and Vila Velha de Rodão) through two different transportation modes, road and rail. Therefore, through the use of geographic information systems as well as optimization software, it is intended, to do a forestry statistical study in Portugal and to use a mathematical model in order to supply the factories with eucalyptus wood using routes with certain associated costs, to achieve the main objective: minimum flux costs of supply. In this way, costs of supply can be analysed in different cases, as well as a future solution for supplying the four Navigator plants, according to the means of transport available and the intermodal transport network.
