Microbiota Intestinal: Da Disbiose à Doença Extra-Intestinal

Abstract

The human organism is colonized by a large number of bacteria, surpassing the number of existing human cells, forming, alongside other microorganisms, the microbiota. The gastrointestinal tract stands out from the remaining body structures as it harbors numerous and diversified bacteria and constitutes one of the largest interfaces between the host and the surrounding environment. Variables such as diet and drugs, among others, may alter the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota. Should the perturbation of the homeostasis be severe enough, it can induce a dysbiotic state, which plays a major role in the pathogenesis and progression of several extra-intestinal diseases, through bacterial components and metabolites and/or the host’s immune system. This document addresses a general approach of the gut microbiota and the relationship between the existing types of dysbiosis and extra-intestinal diseases, such as nephrolithiasis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and asthma, as well as actual therapies and future challenges. Still within the scope of the course unit “Estágio Curricular”, the internship reports referring to both internships in community pharmacy and pharmaceutical industry, in the shape of a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis, in which will be addressed the positive and negative aspects of the internships, considering the internal and external dimensions, the Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences curriculum’s suitability and future perspectives.
