Implementation of a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator (DEA) for robotics application

Abstract

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEA) consist in a thin dielectric elastomer lm, whichis coated on both sides with compliant electrode material. When applying a DC highvoltage (in the range of kV) to the electrodes an electric eld is induced and, therefore, amechanical compression of the elastomer lm occurs. On the presented dissertation, thematerials and fabrication methods are discussed in terms of its accessibility and practicability.VHB and PDMS based DEAs are prototyped and its production methods accessed. The stretchable conductive materials are also studied, namely carbon grease and eGaIn.The area strain and the bending angle of di erent actuators are presented.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------
