Sustainable rehabilitation of a multifamily residential building

Sustainable rehabilitation of a multifamily residential building

Abstract

In recent years there has been an increase in energy consumption and in the continuous growth of global CO2 emissions. This increase is due to the population growth and its activities, with the priority being given to the reduction of carbon dioxide concentrations and, consequently, to the reduction of environmental impacts. As a consequence of recent European policies about new energy and environmental requirements, the rehabilitation of old buildings has become an emerging issue in all Member States.Buildings consume large amounts of energy, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Energy needs can be reduced through the implementation of sustainable rehabilitation measures. In order to implement these measures, a detailed evaluation of various energy rehabilitation strategies is required, so that a solution can be obtained to minimize energy consumption and maximize economic benefits. The present dissertation intended to evaluate different measures of rehabilitation implemented in a building located in Naples. The considered rehabilitation measures were the introduction of insulation on the walls, on the ground floor and on the roof, the replacement of the glass and window frames and, finally, the replacement of the electric heating system by an air conditioning system with and without cooling capacity. The aim is to assess not only the energy aspects but also the economic and environmental aspects for each rehabilitation strategy. The conclusions were established based on the energy results obtained for each considered sustainable rehabilitation measure, where its effectiveness about the energy performance of the building was proved. In addition to conduct an individual analysis of each sustainable rehabilitation solution, it was essential to carry out an analysis that allowed the combination of several sustainable rehabilitation measures considered more appropriate for the present case of study.
