Desnutrição no Idoso

Abstract

The pathophysiological factors, and the prevalence and growth of socioeconomic factorsassociated with the increase in old age, contribute in a way to increase the malnutrition in theElderly. The incidence of malnutrition reaches high levels in hospitalized and outpatients, therefore, accurate and rapid, early diagnosis is essential, as is the importance of implementing orassessing nutritional risk. The early diagnosis (tracking) of nutritional status for adequate intervention (nutritionalcounselling) and clinical-nutritional monitoring, in terms of the adequate needs of micro andmacronutrients, energy, liquid, among others, is of the utmost importance.Protein-caloric malnutrition exacerbates active diseases and increases susceptibility toinfections, increasing the risk for other morbidities, which considerably reduces the quality oflife, thus increasing costs associated with post-treatment and mortality rates. This study aims to review the investigation of malnutrition in the elderly, relating nutrition, health and the concept of quality of life, since with increasing life expectancy, aging of thepopulation increases, implying an increasing number of elderly people with very advancedages, in our country and worldwide.
