Estabilidade de Taludes na Área de Coimbra

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Geomechanical classification and the stability of five roadside slopes, situated in the urban area of Coimbra and its surroundings. Two of the slopes are made of sedimentary rocks, while the other three are made of metamorphic rocks. The study of the slopes was obtained through field observations and characterisation work, so that it was possible to apply several classifications, such as Basic Geotechnical Description (BGD), Rockfall Hazard Rating System (RHRS), Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Slope Mass Rating (SMR). With field work it was possible to identify the existing Lithologies, define their degree of alteration, and to characterize all the existing discontinuities. Some field tests were realized, like the toughness of the rock, which was determined using the Schmidt Hammer. In order to be able to do a more complete characterisation of the material that makes up the slopes, samples were taken, which were later analysed in a Laboratory, through several geotechnical characterization tests, such as volumetric mass and open porosity, Point Load resistance and the material’s durability, measured through the Slake Durability test. From the characterizatisation, that used the results of several classifications and informatics programs, it was possible to evaluate several instability situations in the roadside slopes in study.
