Acupuntura e Eletrocardiograma

Abstract

Introduction: Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and has been used for the treatment of a wide range of conditions including cardiovascular diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain unknown. Objectives: To identify electrocardiographic changes caused by acupuncture. Materials and Methods: This study included 30 volunteers, with ages ranging from 19 to 34 years, without any cardiovascular disease. Acupuncture was performed in three acupoints - Neiguan (PC 06), Shaohai (HT 03) and Lieque (LU 07) - for 15 minutes as well as three electrocardiographic recordings - before acupuncture, after 15 minutes of acupuncture and immediately after the removal of the needles. Data was then analysed using IBMS SPSS 24. Results: 30 volunteers were included, 15 men and 15 women (mean age = 24,2 ± 2,9 years). We found statistically significant differences between S waves in the three electrocardiographic recordings (p<0,005) as well as in QRS complex duration (p=0,009). There was a decrease in the lenght of the S wave and an increase in the QRS complex duration. Age influenced the variations in QRS complex and ST interval duration. Weight influenced changes in the P wave duration. The removal of the needles didn’t cause any statistically significant changes. Conclusion: This study showed electrographic changes related to acupuncture that were within a normal range. A decrease in the S wave amplitude and an increase in QRS complex duration could be related to the acupuncture effect in the Autonomic Nervous System.
