Mortes por queimaduras térmicas

Abstract

Introduction Few injuries have the same devastating potencial as burns. There is no social class that is unaffected; there is no age group that is exempt, there is no population from either developed or third-world countries that is without risk. There are several etiologic agents that produce lesions of this nature, including physical, chemical or biological. This work will only approach deaths from thermal burns, the ones caused by fire, flammable gases at high temperatures, hot liquids, vapors at elevated temperatures, hot solids, radiant heat. Objectives Better knowledge of the national reality of death by burning; Emphasize the important role that forensic medicine can have on public health, providing the knowledge of certain problems in this area and noting trends in specific causes of death, which are essential elements for implementing the most appropriate prevention measures. Actual knowledge The work will be essentially divided into two parts: a literature review, which address the main issues related to deaths from thermal burns and other of personal contribution, which will be a retrospective analysis of cases of deaths due to thermal burns, subjected to forensic autopsy in forensic Pathology Service of the Delegation of INML Center, IP over eight years (between 2003 and 2010). Conclusion This retrospective study has demonstrated in many aspects correspondence of the profile of deaths due to thermal burns in relation to the data found in scientific literature. It should be noted the role of great importance that the complementary exams have, because they are greatly help in establishing the cause of death. Since most of these deaths result from accidents is important to warn, inform and raise awareness of compliance with safety standards when using and handling of flammable and explosive substances. In addition, risk behaviors like smoking in bed, use damaged electrical equipment, proximity to sources of flames should be avoided. This type of study is extremely important so that we can know and intervene in risk factors and behaviors through the adoption of public policies for prevention and public education.
