Abstract

The twentieth century was marked by ideas and desires guided by the gradual racialization of differences and by the consequent process of eugenics and hygienism that characterized that time. In this context, this work aims to present aspects of the trajectory of black men and women, descendants of slaves, referring especially to the discourses and places that have taken in São Paulo black press. Although such speeches can denote the acquisition of some racial consciousness, they not escaped of the reference of order, progress and civilization that were disseminated and legitimated by the dominant ideology in that historical moment. Despite the predominant prejudices of race and gender, it was revealed between the lines of what has been produced in this press, behaviors and dissonant ideals, especially by some black women. Such women even on the margins of the desire for order, discipline and adaptation, dared to celebrate freedom on the streets , parties and dances promoted largely by them within black communities.
