Imagens do Deslocamento

Abstract

This thesis is an inquiry into images of transit found in the work made by the Brazilian artist Marcia Vaitsman, approaching a larger concept of image, not only as a cultural artifact but also, as physical and immaterial subjective modes. It consists of three parts: From Knowledge, presenting concepts that support a contemporary point of reference, the construction of the body in conditions of transit and effects of accelerated change due to technological advances, the conception of shared spaces and times, hybrids and cosmic; From Imagination, describes processes of making, works from 1995 to 2017 and reflections of the artist, which address migration, miscegenation and disorientation. It also points to a type of immortality of the artist resulting from the act of making. From Uptake, the study, as a stimulus and a confrontation, of the works made by the Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa, by the German Venezuelan artist Gego and the Portuguese artist Luisa Correia Pereira, resulted in a laboratory of subjectivity, a search for decolonized practices and relational thoughts, a possible ethics-aesthetic of impermanence and an ectoplasmic laboratory with breakable floor. This is a text-based approximation of thinking processes that take place within the studio of an artist who works with video, photography, moving images and games, without remedying the vulnerabilities, bestialities, and strangeness regarding origins, beliefs, and genres. It is an artistic thought of decolonization and diseducation of the gaze, wishing a different type of humanism, which includes singularities and is equipped to deal with the speed of the changes of today.
