Profilaxia da infecção cirúrgica

Profilaxia da infecção cirúrgica

Abstract

By definition, a surgical site infection (SSI) is an infection that develops within 30 days after an operation, or within one year if an implant is placed and the infection appears to be related to the surgery, affecting tissue in the surgical site. Despite the outstanding progress in development of preventive strategies, SSI is still prevalent in an estimated 5% of surgical patients. The morbidity and mortality rates along with high economic costs associated to SSI continue to pose a true challenge to the surgeon and, in a wider sense, to the healthcare system. This review aims to present an updated and global view on the prophylaxis of SSI and to analyze in detail the preventive measures which are presently areas of interest for the surgical community.
