Estado nutricional em doentes com esclerodermia

Estado nutricional em doentes com esclerodermia

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis is a multisystemic disease that interferes with the nutritional status. The main objective of this study was to assess the nutritional status and body composition in a population of patients with systemic sclerosis, while evaluating a possible relation to functional capacity, disease duration and activity/severity of illness. Material and methods: Body composition was assessed in 20 patients with systemic sclerosis through IB. Clinical questionnaires, nutritional surveys and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability index were applied to study disease activity and manifestations, possible nutritional deviations and functional capacity, respectively. The medical files were retrospectively analyzed to study laboratory parameters. These data were then correlated with those obtained through the IB. Results: None of the patients studied have presented marked changes in body constitution compatible with an evident state of malnutrition. Body composition and nutritional status have not shown a statistically significant relation with functional capacity, time of evolution, laboratory parameters, and the degree of disease activity. Conclusion: Despite no significant correlations achieved between the studied variables, we found that the systemic sclerosis affects the body composition of patients, thus interfering with their quality of life.
