Quedas no idoso

Abstract

Falls are a common problem among older people. Approximately one third of the older adults experience a fall every year, many of those recurrently. Falls consequences can be devastating, not only because of physical injuries, that lead to immobilization, loss of autonomy and even death, but also because of psychological, social and economic consequences. Falls rarely are the result of a single cause, but often present as a multifactorial event, with intrinsic and extrinsic factors contributing to their occurrence. Gait and balance disorders, vision and cognitive impairment, vitamin D deficiency, muscle weakness, cardiovascular abnormalities, polymedication and environment hazards are some risk factors for falls. Falls can be prevented through recognition and correction of these risk factors. Exercise programs, medication review and minimization, vitamin D supplementation, vision and cardiovascular abnormalities correction and environmental modification are effective in preventing falls. Given the population ageing seen nowadays, falls have become a public health problem, requiring attention and intervention
