Voluntariado e emprego: similaridades e diferenças

Abstract

While often discussed as separate objects, there is a clear relationship of proximity between the worlds of volunteering and employment, being this relationship anchored, mainly, on a common historical core. Nevertheless, this relationship, has not always sharp contours. Currently, we are witnessing a gradual increase of interpenetration between the two spheres, visible not only in conceptual terms and language, but also in the context of social practices and public policies. Focusing on the Portuguese reality, the analysis highlights the complementary nature of voluntary work to paid work force. Seeing this growing "convergence" in the world of volunteering and employment, warns us of the risk of being "withdrawn" some of its intrinsic characteristics, namely: being selfless, with personal initiative, unpaid and in favor of a third party. Likewise, points to an increased risk: volunteering can substitute for paid work.
