Comportamentos sexuais dos estudantes de medicina

Abstract

Introduction: In spite of the free access about these subjects during the University years not much is known about the impact that Medical Education has on the sexual satisfaction of medical students or on their sexual practices/behaviors. Aim: To gather data about the target group (medical students) through anonymous and confidential surveys and to analyze the sexual behaviors. To determine the rate of sexual dysfunctions due to the psychological stress associated with Medical Education. Methods: A descriptive study was made (between March and May 2009, and September and November 2009), using surveys filled in by medical students from the University of Coimbra’s Medical’s School. Results: 306 surveys were gathered and validated. 66% were from female students; mean age 21 years old. 83,5% were sexually active (mean starting age 17,5 years old). Of all the male students, 51,9% were in a relationship, 88,5% were heterosexual and 87,5% admitted to masturbation. In the female population, 61,9% were in a relationship, 98,5% were heterosexual and 47% admitted to masturbation. Oral and vaginal sex were the most common forms of sex (60,3%), and vaginal sex was the favorite for most of the students (86,7%). Off all the students, 16,2% were smokers, 74,3% consumed alcohol and 16,8% used drugs. The most common sexual complain on the male population was difficulty to achieve orgasm (25,3%); on the female population dyspareunia was the major complain (64,1%). The use of condom in association with oral contraceptives was the most common form of contraception (35,5%). Sexual Satisfaction on the male students reached a mean of 7,45; on the female population mean sexual satisfaction was 7,56. Sexual satisfaction and sexual dysfunction (male and female) were associated with the remainder variables. Conclusions: Sexual behaviors of this population were analyzed. The rate of difficulty on reaching male orgasm and all types of female sexual dysfunction questioned were higher than expected based on normative data. Further research is required to confirm these findings
