Fendas lábio-palatinas : protocolo terapêutico

Abstract

Cleft lip and palate represent the most common congenital malformation in the head and neck region. These malformations have a great clinical and morphological diversity. Cleft lip and palate present a global prevalence of 1:700, however, it varies according within different geographical areas, being more prevalent in Asian countries. These malformations result from embryological anomalies that occur in the first weeks of pregnancy. Cleft lip and palate can be divided in two groups: Syndromic and Non-Syndromic. They can also be classified as: primary palate clefts, secondary palate clefts and primary and secondary palate clefts. A scientific review of cleft lip and palate’s epidemiology, etiology, embryology and classification was made in this work, considering the most recent literature. The management protocol for these patients, used in the Coimbra’s University Hospital, was described.
