Crioterapia no tratamento de tumores cutâneos

Abstract

Cryotherapy is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that consists of the ablation of skin lesions through freezing. It was introduced in clinical practice in the early twentieth century. The liquid nitrogen is the cryogenic agent of choice today. Cryotherapy is suitable for the treatment of benign and malignant skin lesions such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous-cell carcinoma and lentigo maligna. By means of a literature review it was intended to reassess the use of cryotherapy to treat these pathologies, as well as evaluate its current applicability in clinical practice. We were brought to the conclusion that cryotherapy is a highly effective therapy for superficial and well-defined basal cell carcinomas, squamous-cell carcinomas and lentigo maligna. Cryotherapy has lower morbidity and better cosmetic results than surgical excision, but the latter remains the gold-standard in the treatment of skin tumors. We recommend further studies to evaluate the usefulness of combined therapy including cryotherapy with the goal of improving effectiveness in the treatment of these skin tumors.
