Craniossinostoses

Abstract

Craniosynostosis results from the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures. This untimely fusion produces characteristic craniofacial abnormalities. The birth prevalence of craniosynostosis is estimated 1 in 2000 newborns. The etiology isn’t completely clear, although multiple mechanisms were suggested. Multiple classifications have been proposed, since the initial suggested by Virchow (1851). During the last years these classifications were elaborated considering an anatomo-clinical or the genetic perspective. As more sutures become involved, there is an increasing risk of the subsequent restriction to normal brain growth affecting the child’s neurodevelopment progress, in some cases leading to clinically obvious raised intracranial pressure. Also, as the severity of the condition increases, so does the incidence of associated problems. In this literary review it was also refered the principal characteristics of some types of craniosynostosis, as well as the chirurgical procedures. It is necessary an early and multidisciplinary approach, with a specific therapeutical program to prevent the effects of late diagnosis.
