Associação entre Diabetes Mellitus e Periodontite

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insufficient secretion and / or insulin action, which can cause alterations in periodontal tissues, leading to the aggravation of an existing periodontitis. This can be related to the vascular peripheral diseases that cause disturbances in healing and other physiological perturbations, reducing the immune response and increasing the susceptibility to infections. Additionally, it is important to refer that periodontitis can lead to an alteration of glycemia levels, boosting all the symptoms of hyperglycemia. Therefore, it is crucial to deepen the knowledge of the mechanisms associated to the physiopathology of periodontitis and related to diabetes mellitus, in order to improve the preventive and curative cares. This work aims at studying the relation between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus and the way both influence one another, based on a bibliographic review. It pretends to identify the changes that diabetes can cause to periodontal tissues and the way it influences the recurrence and severity of periodontitis. On the other hand, it is important to clarify the interference that periodontitis can cause to glycemia levels.
