Abstract

The aim of this study concerns the analysis of speeches of Prison Establishment of Leiria´s inmates as to their representations on the issues of stigma, self-stigma, discrimination, identity and prospects for social reintegration. Ten male inmates were selected aged between 24 and 57 years, attending school in prison. We proceed to the application of a semi directive interview to each individual, and posteriorly to a content analysis. The results indicate that the processes of stigmatization and labelling negatively influence the future life prospects of inmates, which although they seem not self-stigmatizing, they exhibit prejudices against the minority which represent them.
